Face Fit Testing

Face Fit testing is mandatory for all tight fitting face pieces, i.e FFP3 (Disposable Masks), Half Mask, Full Face Mask.

There are two methods of Face Fit Testing. Quantitative and Qualitative. Both are approved by the H.S.E. Face Fit Testing must be conducted by a competent person, who is preferably an experienced Fit2Fit accredited fit tester technician or trained to the H.S.E standard (H.S.E O.C 282/28).

The main difference between the two procedures is the Qualitative method is a taste test, where the employee wears a hood over there head and Bitrex is sprayed inside the hood to establish whether or not they can taste the Bitrex. Quantitative you do not wear a hood and is tested using what is called a "Portacount machine".

The objectives of Qualitative and Quantitative testing are to recreate a working environment and to test the Respiratory Protective Equipment (Masks/R.P.E) to ensure the R.P.E fits the candidate correctly and forming a good seal around where the mask comes into contact with the face.

The candidate will have to perform some simple exercises whilst wearing the selected mask/R.P.E. These exercises are: Normal and Deep Breathing, Head Side to Side, Head Up and Down, Talking Out Loud and Bending Over. The exercises are to simulate work activity. These are the times R.P.E may fail or leak. During the Quantitative test the candidate will have to walk or step to increase their breathing, whilst performing the above exercises. All the tests take between 15 to 20 minutes, depending on any re-tests due to a failure.

Once the candidate has passed the face fit test, they will be issued with an employee certificate showing their details, R.P.E model and date tested.

The employee may now have peace of mind the R.P.E selected is performing and protecting them in hazardous environments. This is as long as the R.P.E is being donned (Put on) correctly and maintained to regulation standards.

All our Face Fit Testers are accredited to Fit2Fit standards, which is recognized and supported by the Health and Safety Executive ( H.S.E ). Visit www.Fit2Fit.org to check our accredited status.
